Aluminum feeder and service cable is light for its size, which is exactly why it gets stacked in a corner and forgotten. In the larger sizes it is still a specified product with a real market.
- Aluminum XHHW-2 feeder in 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, 250, 350, 500 and 750 kcmil.
- SER and SEU service entrance cable in common assemblies such as 2-2-2-4 and 4/0-4/0-2/0.

How aluminum is valued
Aluminum is worth less per pound than copper, so the offer depends heavily on size and length. A full 1,000-foot reel of 4/0 aluminum XHHW-2 is a useful product. The same reel with 200 feet left is a much smaller transaction, and #2 aluminum in short lengths is usually not worth a separate pickup.
Weathering is normal for URD and USE-2, which are made to be buried. Chalky jackets and faded print are expected. What is not expected is water inside the reel or corrosion climbing up the conductor strands, and that is worth checking before you photograph the lot.

- Size and conductor count, for example 4/0-4/0-2/0 aluminum SER.
- Footage remaining on each reel.
- Voltage class for any underground distribution cable.

Questions about aluminum wire and cable
Is aluminum wire from the 1970s worth buying?
Sometimes. Early small-gauge aluminum branch wire has a poor reputation and little demand. Larger feeder and service cable from that era is more useful, and condition decides the rest.
Do you buy URD with a concentric neutral?
Yes, in 15kV and 25kV constructions, on reels with a known length. Send the voltage class and the neutral configuration.
Can aluminum service cable be stored outdoors?
It is commonly stored outdoors, but keep reels off the ground and cut ends sealed. Water wicking into the strands is the main thing that reduces value.
