Building wire
Sell surplus XHHW and XHHW-2 wire in Kentucky
XHHW is the workhorse feeder insulation in industrial construction: cross-linked polyethylene over copper or aluminum, often ordered in large quantities for a single switchgear or panel schedule and left over when the schedule changes.
- Copper XHHW-2 feeders in #6 through 750 kcmil.
- Aluminum XHHW-2 in 1/0 through 1000 kcmil, the size range most often specified for service and distribution feeders.
- XHHW control and power conductors pulled from a cancelled project and never installed.
- Colored conductors, including black, red, blue, white and green grounding.
- Reels with damaged or missing labels, where the jacket legend is still readable.
- Mixed pallets of XHHW and THHN that were stored together in a plant crib.
Why XHHW lots are usually larger than they look
XHHW is commonly bought for gear-to-gear feeders, so a surplus lot tends to arrive in the big sizes: 350, 500 and 750 kcmil copper, or 4/0 through 500 kcmil aluminum. A single leftover reel of 500 kcmil copper can carry more value than a pallet of small branch wire, which is why we ask for the size and footage first and the photo second.
Aluminum XHHW-2 is often mistaken for scrap because it is light and the insulation is thick. It is worth checking the jacket legend before anything is cut or discarded: AA-8000 aluminum feeder in good condition has a real resale market, and it is priced on the metal content and the remaining length.
| What we ask | Why it changes the number |
|---|---|
| Conductor metal | Copper and aluminum price very differently per pound of conductor |
| Size in kcmil | Larger feeders carry more metal per foot and fewer buyers |
| Remaining footage | A part reel is priced on what is on the reel, not the original length |
| Voltage rating | 1kV rated constructions are valued above standard 600V building wire |
| Jacket condition | Sun damage, cuts or moisture wicking reduce the offer |
Where it turns up
Manufacturing plants replacing a distribution panel, electrical contractors closing out a industrial build in the Louisville or Lexington corridors, and distributors clearing a discontinued size are the three most common sources. Plants that keep a spare-feeder policy often hold duplicate reels of the same size for years, which is exactly the inventory we are set up to buy.
Questions about xhhw / xhhw-2 wire
Do you buy XHHW without the reel tag?
Yes. Photograph the jacket legend, which prints the size, insulation type and voltage, and measure or estimate the coil diameter. That is usually enough to price it.
What is the difference between XHHW and XHHW-2?
XHHW-2 is rated for 90 degrees C in both wet and dry locations, which is why it is specified for underground and exterior feeders. Both are bought, and the rating is part of how we price the reel.
Will you take a mixed pallet?
Yes. Send one photo of the pallet and a list of what is on it. Mixed lots are common and are priced line by line.
